Almost 10% of people are left hand dominant, but no-one knows exactly how handedness develops. Although handedness most commonly relates to writing, it also describes a preference for using one hand or the other for a range of different everyday activities. Genetics have been identified as a possible cause of handedness as well as the way a baby’s brain develops while a foetus. Brain asymmetry could be another factor and research has shown that this has been a significant feature in human development for a million years.
